Frequently Asked Questions
“We do not grow absolutely, chronologically. We grow sometimes in one dimension, and not in another; unevenly. We grow partially. We are relative. We are mature in one realm, childish in another. The past, present, and future mingle and pull us backward, forward, or fix us in the present. We are made up of layers, cells, constellations.”
– Anaïs Nin
Why is the practice called Cosmos Therapy?
“Cosmos” is a Greek word typically used to refer to the universe. However, when Pythagoras first used it in the 6th century B.C., it was also used to refer to “order,” “harmony,” or the opposite of chaos. The ancient Greeks felt the universe, though vast, was perfectly in order. This felt relevant when naming my practice because many people choose therapists to support them in discovering harmony.
Cosmos are also the name of one of my favorite flowers. They’re small flowers in the sunflower family. They bloom in many bright colors all over the world, despite growing in nutrient-poor soils, and strike me as a beautiful reminder of resilience.
What happens in a phone consultation?
A phone consultation is a 15-minute, informal discussion to determine if we could be a good fit for counseling. Although this is not therapy, it’s an important part of getting to know one another, and for me to know how I might best support your goals. If the therapy is for someone under 18, I ask that the teen and at least one guardian are involved. I encourage you to ask questions too!
Which clients are best-suited to work with me?
I work with adults and teens, ages 14 and up, who are actively seeking help with any of the following: trauma, anxiety, fear, worry, repetitive behavior, life transitions, relationship problems, irritability/anger, low self-esteem, perfectionism, and/or substance use. Family involvement in treatment is also required when working with those under 18. I am very experienced in working with disorders related to overcontrol. I also am also uniquely interested in supporting professionals from all backgrounds in the technology industry with burnout, isolation, anxiety, substance use, exclusion, and other issues. The clients I work with are motivated to explore unhealthy patterns through multiple pathways including thoughts, behaviors, and sensations in the body. They often not only want to feel better, but want to know WHY an intervention works. I love providing good information and get excited about psychoeducation!
How does online therapy work?
Good question! Whether you are concerned about exposure to COVID-19, or would just prefer to do therapy from the comfort of your own home, I am happy to offer telehealth therapy. I use TherapyNotes’ HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform for online therapy – or in extenuating circumstances, I may use another HIPAA-compliant service. I am unable to use non-compliant services such as Skype or Facetime. I am able to see clients located anywhere in the state of North Carolina, and as of 3/18/2021, in the State of Maine. Click here for more information. Unfortunately, there is no national reciprocity licensure for mental health practitioners during the COVID-19 crisis, so I am unlikely to provide you with sessions while you are traveling outside of the state. (Ask me how you can get involved on this issue if you’d like to!)
After we agree that we could be a good match for therapy, I will grant you access to the online client portal. You’ll be asked to complete and upload a bit of intake paperwork (just the once!) before our first appointment. After that, you can schedule your first appointment and will receive a link to connect online at that time. You only need a device with video and microphone capabilities, such as a laptop, cell phone, or tablet. A strong internet connection works best. You can also continue to schedule and manage your appointments through the client portal. You’ll return to the same telehealth link each time you have a session. That’s it!
Do you accept insurance?
Cosmos Therapy is unable to bill insurance companies directly at this time. However, at your request, we can provide you with a superbill to submit to your insurance company for the reimbursable portion of your sessions.
Which clients am I not the best fit for?
All clients, including teens, must be entering therapy voluntarily and expecting to put forth some effort. Individuals who are attending therapy primarily for some other reason than their own desire for recovery will be referred to another reputable professional or service. Individuals who are actively struggling with suicidal intent or behaviors, those at risk of medical withdrawal, and those experiencing active symptoms of psychosis are also not a good fit and will be provided with a quality referral for support. I do not offering couples’ or premarital counseling at this time.
What are your fees? Do you accept reduced fee/sliding scale?
Fees for 2021 are as follows:
- Therapy intake, up to 75 minutes: $155
- Individual therapy, 55 minutes: $140
